Emotional Response: Homework

1. Watch the Scorsese short The Big Shave (1967) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=83i8G6o0quc
2. In what ways might this be seen to be 'shocking' in terms of both content and style?
3. Try to analyse the way the film has been put together in terms of its use of mise-en-scene, cinematography, editing, sound, genre (not forgetting the genre of TV advertisements) and narrative structure, in order to shock.
4. Do you think there is any way in which the 'shock' in this film short may be said to be used to any social or political purpose? Consider what was happening during the period in both American foreign policy and home affairs.
5. Choose an additional 3rd case study film, watch and take note of key scenes that bring about an emotional response in the same way that we did in class
6. Write down the key scenes from American History X that could potentially be seen as shocking
